Multi-disciplinary study of a submarine landslide: the Ana slide case study (Eivissa Channel, western Mediterranean)

The Ana slide is one of four submarine slides in the Eivissa Channel (western Mediterranean) with a common slip plane along the same stratigraphic level. Whether or not these instabilities happened at the same time is uncertain; it is likely that these individual slides have the same preconditioning factors and triggering mechanisms. Geophysical and geochemical data suggest a possible relationship with fluid migration, and thus excess pore pressure, for these slides. In situ geotechnical investigations indicate that the base of the Ana slide is slightly coarser compared to the sediments surrounding the slip plane, which constitutes a likely candidate for methane accumulation during upward migration. Partial gas saturation at the time of failure in the sediments may well be one of the critical preconditioning factors resulting in the instability. This study evaluates the potential triggering mechanisms of the Ana slide by means of numerical simulations of the effects of methane accumulation and earthquake loading on the slope stability.
