The Variscan oroclines, a Pangea's twist of fate

The formation of the supercontinent Pangea is one of the hits in geology - commonly interpreted to have formed in the Upper Carboniferous as a result of collision of Gondwana and Laurussia, and forming the contorted Variscan-Alleghanian orogen as a result. Notably, tectonic reconstructions of Pangea ignore the role of those oroclines. Some of those oroclines are interpreted to be secondary and affect the whole lithosphere. In the present presentation we will explore the kinematics of formation of these oroclines, their geological effects that buckling the lithosphere caused from the upper crust to lithospheric delamination. Finally, we will inspect the broader geodynamic causes and consequences of the formation of the Variscan oroclines during the assembly of Pangea.
