The nanogranitoids connection- Bridging the gap between metamorphism and magmatism

Metamorphism and magmatism continuously shape our dynamic planet, and anatexis is the crucial process bridging these two realms. Magmatic processes have been thoroughly characterized in the last decades through the investigation of melt inclusions. Now the finding of melt inclusions in migmatites, called nanogranitoids, allows us to apply the same powerful approach to the study of anatexis and crustal differentiation during orogenesis.
Partial melts can be now characterized in detail for each and every protolith and PT condition, and the volatiles (H2O, Cl, CO2) involved in melting quantified. Cryptic anatectic events can be identified, and partial melting reactions confidently constrained. This is a completely new field of study, and as every new field it brings unexpected findings and surprises, such as the occurrence in the inclusions of very rare polymorphs and clear evidence for the production of crustal carbonatites. A more precise understanding of fluids, melts and crustal evolution during orogenesis lays ahead on the road of nanogranitoids investigation.
