The young volcanoes of the Main Ethiopian Rift
The Main Ethiopian Rift valley is one of the world's largest but least well-studied volcanic fields. Although there have been no confirmed eruptions within the main rift in the past 100 years, geologically young activity has included fissure-fed eruptions of mafic lavas and scoria; and explosive eruptions of silicic magmas from central vent volcanoes that are spaced along the centre of the rift. In the past five years, a large-scale collaborative project has been investigating the Late Quaternary volcanism of the main rift, and this talk will provide an overview of our current ideas on the links between past caldera-forming eruptions of the rift, current geothermal activity and implications for hazards, water resources and metallogeny.
