Rheology of rock forming minerals from deformation experiments: The method and some difficulties illustrated by the example of quartz.

We will review some aspects of experimental work for the determination of constitutive relationships of minerals (flow laws). Then, the pertinent problems of quartz deformation will be presented based on new experiments performed in past few years. In particular, the role of H2O for deformation (in quartz and olivine) will be discussed in detail and the general problems of experimental work for the derivation of flow laws and their application will be discussed.
